About Bikaner

Bikaner is a District in the northwest of the state of Rajasthan in northern India. It is located 330 kilometers northwest of the state capital, Jaipur . The city was founded by Rao Bika. Now it has developed into the fifth largest city in Rajasthan. The Ganges Canal and the Indira Gandhi Canal allowed the farming of crops such as mustard, cotton, groundnuts, wheat and vegetables. Bikaner is famous for sweets and snacks (or Namkeens in Hindi).The internal transport system in Bikaner consists of auto rickshaws and city buses. Bikaner is connected to major Indian cities via broad gauge railway. Bikaner is well served with roads national highways NH-11, 15 and 89 meet at Bikaner. There is an under construction domestic airport at Nal 12 km from city which will start its flights for Delhi and Jaipur in mid 2013. Dry port is also proposed for Bikaner and which will improve and enhance its industrialization. Bikaner is famous as a heritage royal city, for its Bikaneri Bhujia and sweets. Bikaner is also known for its handicrafts and leather articles, for its historical palaces .Bikaner having Asia's biggest Camel research farm (NRCC), New breed of horses are prepared at (NRCE). Bikaner is a leading Carpet Yarn Manufacturing Centre in the World and it is Asia’s Biggest Wool Market.

Some famous fairs and festivals of Bikaner:

  1. International Camel Festival, at Ladera Dunes, 25 km away from Bikaner City. Each January the state government organizes a camel festival with camel races, various cultural events and fire dance is performed.

  6. Kodamdesar Mela :- Kodamdesar mela is celebrated in the village of Kodamdesar 20 km far from bikaner where the temple of lord bhairoon is situated.

  7. Aksaye Tritya or "AKKHA TEEJ": the foundation day of Bikaner. This was the day when Rao Bika laid the foundation of the new empire. Every year on this day people from across the social spectrum enjoy themselves by flying kites or "CHANDA".

  8. Paryushan: The biggest festival of Jain community is celebrated.
